Take a deep breath

Whether you want to blow out candles to celebrate, are exercising, or due to stress, how we breathe changes.

Each exercise has a linked breathing pattern to facilitate the movement. Sometimes it may feel like we just aren't successful at coordinating deep breathing and moving with Pilates exercises.

HELPFUL BREATHING TIPS:

  • Breathing is a tool not a rule. It's okay to flip-flop the breathing pattern, or focus entirely on something else too.

  • As long as you're breathing, that's great. If you notice you tend to hold your breath with challenging exercises, awareness is the first action towards change. We can always layer on more awareness/alter the breathing in future Pilates classes.

  • Focus on specific breathing classes or exercises. I don't recommend this all the time OR for everyone. But if you do want to focus on deep Pilates Style Breathing, it can be a wonderful practice to make the exercises more effective. This is also why physical therapists recommend breathing exercises for their patients. It's because breathing is a powerful and simple tool to help reduce pain (hello natural childbirth), restore core or pelvic floor function, reduce stress, and there are more benefits too!
